The American Red Cross lifeguard training course is a comprehensive program that teaches participants the skills they need to safely staff a pool or beach. The course includes instruction in first aid, CPR, and AED use, as well as water rescue techniques. In order to take the course, participants must be at least 15 years old and able to swim 300 yards continuously, perform a deep-water dive, and tread water for two minutes. After successfully completing the course, participants will be certified as lifeguards for two years. The American Red Cross also offers recertification courses for lifeguards who need to renew their certification.

Although the majority of the course is spent in the classroom, students also have the opportunity to practice their skills in a controlled environment. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED use. They will also be prepared to handle aquatic emergencies, including rescues and resuscitations.    With the exception of breaks for meals and physical activity, the course is completed in one weekend. However, students are encouraged to review their materials on a regular basis to ensure that they remain confident in their ability to provide safe and effective care.

How much does it cost to enroll in a lifeguard training course?

Lifeguard LI charges $400 for a full certification course and $200 for recertification classes. We do offer group discounts and referral bonuses for inviting friends to the course.   Reimbursement will be offered if a candidate accepts a job at one of Lifeguard LI's managed facilities.

At the end of most training courses, students are typically required to take a certification test in order to demonstrate their knowledge and proficiency in the subject matter. The lifeguard training course is no different.    Students who successfully pass the certification test will be awarded a certificate of completion, which will allow them to work as a lifeguard at most pools and beaches. The test consists of both a written and practical component. For the written portion, students will need to correctly answer questions about first aid, CPR, and water safety.    The practical portion of the test will require students to demonstrate their ability to perform various rescue techniques. While the certification test can be challenging, it is a necessary step in becoming a lifeguard.

How long is the American Red Cross lifeguard certification valid for?

Lifeguard certifications are valid for two years from the date of issue. In order to renew your certification, you must take a recertification course within those two years. The traditional lifeguarding recertification course includes a written exam, a skills test, and a CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification. The waterpark and waterfront courses include the same written exam and CPR/AED certification, but the skills test is replaced with a water rescue simulation. After successfully completing any of these courses, your Red Cross lifeguard certification will be valid for another two years.   You have a 45-day grace period between your certification lapsing and being able to take a recertification course. Once the 45-day grace period has lapsed, you will be required to take the full lifeguard certification course again.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to take a lifeguard course?

Many people believe that they need to be strong swimmers in order to take a lifeguard course, but this is not the case. While it is certainly helpful to be a strong swimmer, it is not a requirement.    Lifeguards are trained to rescue people who are in danger of drowning, and they use a number of different methods to do so. As long as you are comfortable in the water and able to follow instructions, you will be able to successfully complete a lifeguard course. I   f you are unsure about your swimming abilities, there are always practice sessions that you can participate in before the course begins. Bottom line: you don’t need to be a strong swimmer to take a lifeguard course, but it certainly doesn’t hurt.
