Lifeguard certifications are valid for two years from the date of issue. In order to renew your certification, you must take a recertification course within those two years. The traditional lifeguarding recertification course includes a written exam, a skills test, and a CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification. The waterpark and waterfront courses include the same written exam and CPR/AED certification, but the skills test is replaced with a water rescue simulation. After successfully completing any of these courses, your lifeguard certification will be valid for another two years. You have a 45-day grace period between your certification lapsing and being able to take a recertification course.
